What is an IVA?
Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) have existed for 25 years and are not therefore a new way of handling debts. However, their popularity has grown in recent years as more people now understand how they can work to clear unaffordable debts. By assessing total unsecured debts and total disposable income, lenders agree what they are prepared to accept as a full and final settlement on all your unsecured debts. This amount is worked out by assessing how much you can afford to pay each month then usually spreading these payments over five years. A legal document is then drawn up whereby a large amount of your debt will be written off so long as you stick to the vastly reduced monthly payments for the length of the IVA.
